Philip J. Corr on Perception - Dictionary of Arguments

Corr I 364
Perception/anxiety/defensive distance//Corr: Although we can equate defensive distance with real distance, it is more accurately seen as a perception; that is, an internal quantity that defines defensive reactions to a fixed unit of threat (i.e., magnitude x distance). This rather humble statement provides an immediate explanation for ‘neurosis’; that is, individual differences in the susceptibility to neurotic disorder. a more defensive person (for simplicity here, defined so as to cut across both fear and anxiety) will perceive a threat of a fixed objective value as being more threatening (i.e., closer) than a less defensive person.
